Historic Downtown Titusville; where history and the future collide

Historic Downtown Titusville; where history and the future collide

Walking into Historic Downtown Titusville is like walking back in time. Eighteenth-century buildings, which once housed banks and grocery stores, tell stories of the downtown’s creation and subsequent blossom during the 1920’s Florida land boom, and the streets which were once walked by Apollo astronauts echo the miracles of the local space industry.  While the history remains, the future is here. The same historic buildings are now home to exciting breweries and restaurants while the streets still pave way for modern-century pioneers and high-tech innovators.

FOOD AND DRINK

Playalinda Brewing Company’s Hardware Store is the anchor of Downtown, serving up unique craft beer and tasty bar food in a 100-year-old hardware shop turned brewery. With outdoor seating on the walkway, it is the place to catch up with friends, or make a few new ones. Oh Vino is a place of discovery, with an extensive list of curated wines and unique beers that you would only find from far-away travels. Whiskey’s Bar and Lounge, also known as the Olden Bank Tavern, is a stop for that classic bar vibe, just this one has its ceiling lined with antique tiles in its century-old building. For your dose of morning motivation, Sunrise Bread Company serves up Batdorf and Bronson coffee alongside their homemade breads, scones, muffins and more. Pier 13 Coffee is next-level, grinding their coffee in house for unique concoctions and seasonal specialties, and for those Florida summer days, frozen coffee that is out of this world.  Don’t forget the cherry on top at Mad Utter Ice Cream, a small-town creamery with mouth-watering creations and the chance to create your own, with a marble-slab for mixing – and then devouring.

The Titusville Playhouse, at the Historic Emma Parrish Theatre is entering its 56th season and the final stages of a $1.7 million remodel, transforming the interior of the playhouse into a relaxing and stunning environment. The building itself has stood for over a century in the heart of Downtown Titusville, and has not only hosted Saloons and Hotels, but is also host to other other-worldly visitors. River and Main Barbershop offers a traditional vintage vibe with the services, and company, to match. Treat yourself to a hot-towel shave, or take the little guy for an authentic first haircut. Take a tour back in time at the Pritchard House to learn the history of the Pritchard family and explore artifacts and collections from the early 1900’s. In 2018, the City of Titusville was designated as Florida’s second-only official trail town by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Greenways and Trails Council, anchoring the eastern end of the state-spanning Coast to Coast Trail. Not only does this trail go right through downtown, allowing you to hop off the bike for a bite to eat or refreshing beer, eventually it will connect to Playalinda Beach on Canaveral National Seashore, one of America’s National Parks. While you ride through, make sure to check out the growing selection of murals for that photogenic moment. Spaceview Park combines the area’s history in space exploration with perfect natural views, and since Titusville is known as the Gateway to Nature and Space, what better way to celebrate this unique city (view of the Vehicle Assembly Building and launchpads might be a draw, too).

Downtown Titusville’s dedication to its history is as equal to its dedication for its growth and progress. In 2017, Red Canyon Engineering and Software announced plans to open its first regional office in Downtown Titusville, spearheading a rejuvenation project for the historic Walker Bank and Apartment building on Washington Ave. Along with new jobs, Red Canyon is developing boutique style apartments, a food hall which will house 10 food vendors and 2 bars, with outdoor dining all open to the heart of Downtown Titusville.
